RG Kar Medico Death Case: Resident Doctors Association threatens nationwide Phase 2 protest
New Delhi: The Federation of
Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA) has announced that it is considering
stepping up protests by doctors across the country, standing in solidarity with
their colleagues in West Bengal. This decision follows the Supreme Court’s
directive urging protesting doctors to return to work.
In a recent statement,
FORDA emphasized that their fight extends beyond seeking justice for the young
doctor who tragically lost his life following a brutal assault at Kolkata’s RG
Kar Medical College.
Stating that “the memory
of Abhaya fuels our resolve,” the association pointed out that it will support
the protest until her death is avenged, and the healthcare system in the
country is restored to prevent such tragedies from happening again.
In its statement, FORDA
stated, “We write to you today with deep sorrow and rage as the movement for
justice for Abhaya continues to be undermined by the very institutions meant to
protect the rights and safety of our society. The recent Supreme Court hearing
regarding the brutal rape and murder of our colleagues at RG Kar Medical
College on the 9th of August has left us completely disheartened. We had hoped
for a swift and fair resolution to this horrific crime, but instead, the
proceedings have taken a disappointing turn.”
It is not only the
Hon’ble court’s inaction but also the appalling defense put up by representatives
of the West Bengal government, led by Kapil Sibal, that has shocked and
disappointed the members of the association. “They are now resorting to petty
tactics, citing false statistics and misleading the Hon’ble Supreme Court to
diminish the legitimacy of our protest. ‘These actions are not only disrespectful
to the memory of Abhaya but also to the entire medical fraternity who stand united
in this fight for Justice,” the association added.
Pointing out that senior
doctors continue to provide their services diligently, FORDA stated that junior
doctors should not be held responsible for deaths or disruptions in the
hospitals. Stating the steps against doctors as a deliberate attempt to discredit
the movement, the association added, “This is not only false but an insult to
the dedication and integrity of our junior colleagues who have been at the
forefront of this struggle for a safer and more just healthcare environment. Instead
of working to deliver justice swiftly, the state government machinery has only sought
to diffuse the movement by requesting doctors to return to work.”
“We assure you that our
support is unwavering. We will not allow this protest to be silenced, and we
will stand with you until justice is served. We assure you that FORDA is
exploring all possible options as a mark of support and shall consider a
PHASE-2 intensification of our protest after discussion with all stakeholder
RDAs. The apathy and inaction of W.B Govt is truly terrifying,” the association
added.
