Detailed forensic analysis linked the device to Roy, who had been observed in CCTV footage near the seminar hall around the time of the crime. CDSCO panel approves AstraZeneca’s proposal for Amendment in Package Insert for Saxagliptin tablets

New Delhi: The Subject Expert Committee (SEC) functional under the Central Drug Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has approved the drug major AstraZeneca’s proposal for amendment in Package Insert from Version-11 to Version-12 for drug Onglyza (Saxagliptin) tablets 2.5mg and 5mg.

This came after the firm presented the proposal for amendment in Package Insert from Version-11 to Version-12 for the drug Onglyza (Saxagliptin) tablets 2.5mg and 5mg.

Onglyza (Saxagliptin) is a prescription medication used in combination with diet and exercise to help manage blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. Saxagliptin is a DPP-4 inhibitor used for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Saxagliptin is a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor antidiabetic for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. DPP-4 inhibitors are a class of compounds that work by affecting the action of natural hormones in the body called incretins. Incretins decrease blood sugar by increasing consumption of sugar by the body, mainly through increasing insulin production in the pancreas, and by reducing production of sugar by the liver.

At the recent SEC meeting for Endocrinology and Metabolism held on July 11, 2024, the expert panel reviewed the proposal for amendment in Package Insert from Version-11 to Version-12 for the drug Onglyza (Saxagliptin) tablets 2.5mg and 5mg.

After detailed deliberation, the committee recommended the approval of the amendment in PI from Version-11 to Version-12 for the drug Onglyza (Saxagliptin) tablets 2.5mg and 5mg.

Sassoon General Hospital reels under shortage of staff, medicines, funds

Pune: Sassoon General Hospital one of Pune’s largest healthcare facilities is dealing with a critical situation that originated during the COVID-19 pandemic. At the peak of the pandemic Sassoon General Hospital was compelled to expand its capacity to provide affordable health care for the patients by adding 500 extra beds.

The expansion was mandatory but it wasn’t sanctioned by the State Government. Consequently, the hospital staff sanctioned for 1297 beds are now grappling with a workload of nearly, 1800 beds.

Also Read:Another MS Orthopaedics medico at Sassoon Hospital suspended for alleged involvement in abandoning disabled patient

According to The Times of India, former director and Directorate of Medical Education and Research, Dr Dilip Mhasekar, highlighted the complexities involved in seeking approval for additional resources and said, “Plus, a nod will be needed for extra nurses, class IV employees, and medicines. Only then will the required funds be disbursed.”

Dr. Mhaisekar also revealed that the hospital received a recent proposal regarding the additional beds from BJ Medical College which is attached to the Sassoon Hospital. He promptly forwarded this proposal to the state health department, hoping to speed up the approval process and secure the necessary resources for the hospital.

It has a sanctioned capacity of 2,341 posts for Class I to Class IV employees, based on the original requirement for 1,297 beds. Though, only 1,717 of these posts are currently filled which leaves 624 positions, or 26%, vacant. The hospital needs at least 3241 employees in all categories to manage the extra workload. That means, the hospital stands with a vacancy of 47% and the hospital is currently working with half of the required workforce. Due to this shortage, the staff is facing a heightened workload which can not only affect their well-being but also can compromise patient care.

Dr Eknath Pawar, dean of the medical college which is affiliated with the Sassoon College Pune, said, “As of now, we are recruiting Class IV employees who are responsible for sanitation work and patient handling. We have floated tenders to hire them on a contract basis.” However, this represents a temporary solution to a more complex issue.

In addition to staffing issues, the hospital is also dealing with a severe shortage of essential medicines. This shortage is further impacting the patient care facility in the region’s biggest govt hospital.

For example, Usa Ali (36), who visited the hospital’s neurosurgery outpatient department (OPD), on 24th June faced a troubling situation when the six medicines prescribed to him were unavailable at the hospital pharmacy, located within the OPD. He further stated that he had bought those medicines from a private Pharmacy outside the hospital for Rs 350.

Another patient seeking treatment for dry and itchy skin was prescribed five medicines, but he could only obtain three from the hospital pharmacy. The prescription shows the missing items included, FSFA, a multivitamin and multi-mineral tablet, and paraffin lotion, which is a primary treatment for dry skin.

Despite the presence of three private pharmacies on the hospital premises which includes a generic medicine store and a Jan Asudh Kendra established under the Central govt program, the shortage of medicine persists.

According to the data obtained by RTI query which was filed by TOI, in the financial year of 2023-24, the hospital spent Rs 5.64 crore on medicines, the highest in the past six years. However, this figure marks a significant decrease compared to 2018-19 according to the RTI DATA. Between 2019 and 2023, expenditures on medicines did not exceed Rs 2 crore annually, except in 2021-22, when Rs 3.40 crore was spent.

The third major issue is hospitals are dealing with a lack of funds. Sassoon General Hospital receives its funds from the District Planning and Development Council and various charities, apart from funds allocated by the DMER. However, the data from the hospital shows that these funds are not enough as per the demand.

Medical Education and Research Minister Hasan Mushrif, however, has downplayed these concerns by mentioning that everything is fine at the hospital. During the assembly’s monsoon session in early July, he stated, “We have empowered the dean to purchase medicines for up to 30% of the hospital’s requirement”.

The minister has also mentioned that the DMER director met Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) officials, who had assured that all vacant posts of class I and II employees would be filled soon. He further stated, “For class III employees we have filled most of the posts while for class IV, we have asked the district collector to make the necessary appointments. So, there is not much scarcity of workforce under the medical education department.” He concluded his speech by inviting all public representatives from Pune to join him for a visit to Sassoon Hospital and observe that the facility is performing well.

Are our Women Doctors Safe? Man Arrested After Threatening Doctor with Same Fate as RG Kar PG Medico

Kolkata: The safety of women doctors across the country was once again challenged recently when a man in Bengal’s Purba Bardhaman district threatened a lady doctor of a similar fate as the rape and murder of the PG doctor at R G Kar Medical College, Kolkata.

PTI has reported that the man- Susanta Roy was a patient, who threatened the female doctor if his treatment was delayed. Roy was arrested after doctors and nurses of the state-run Bhatar State General Hospital staged a protest against the incident.

The patient, in an inebriated condition, entered the emergency ward of the Bhatar State General Hospital and threatened the lady doctor that she would face the same consequence that a trainee medic had experienced in a Kolkata hospital.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that a PG Respiratory Medicine Student at RG Kar Medical College was found dead inside the seminar hall on Friday. Her half-naked body was full of injuries with bleeding from both the eyes and her mouth, injury on the face and nails, bleeding from her genitals, and several other injury marks in different parts of the body. A preliminary autopsy report has confirmed sexual abuse before she was killed.

Only days after this, a man in Bengal’s Purba Bardhaman District threatened a female doctor with similar consequences if she did not treat him properly. Commenting on the matter, a Purba Bardhaman district health official told PTI, “The patient allegedly told the attending doctor that if the medic did not treat him properly, he would ensure the same treatment as the woman doctor of R G Kar Hospital in Kolkata witnessed. The doctor, as part of her duty and medical ethics, did not stop the treatment, and she discussed the matter with other staffers. Today, they came in a group to the CMOH office and demanded punishment of the man and security for the health personnel.”

A senior police official confirmed that the accused, identified as Susanta Roy, was arrested. The district official said Roy is a civic volunteer, a contractual staff working under the local police. Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that police recently arrested the prime suspect Sanjay Roy, also a civic volunteer, in connection with the R G Kar murder case.

First, the murder case at R G Kar, followed by the incident of threatening a lady doctor on duty of rape and murder- these incidents have highlighted the vulnerable condition of security being offered to female doctors at their workplace.

Night duties are a regular part of the job description of a resident doctor, irrespective of their gender. This is a requirement every doctor has to fulfil while pursuing their education. However, in light of this recent incident, doctors have started wondering if just wandering into an isolated area at night can turn out to be fatal for female doctors.

Meanwhile, doctors across the country have initiated a strike in protest of the murder of the lady doctor at R G Kar. Doctors are demanding a fast-track investigation of the matter so that the real culprits are brought to Justice. Announcing casework in the Kolkata hospitals, the protesting doctors are also demanding an increased number of security personnel at the hospitals, 24×7 CCTV monitoring etc.

Sandoz gets USFDA nod for Enzeevu

Basel: Sandoz has announced that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Enzeevu (aflibercept-abzv) 2 mg vial kit and pre-filled syringe for intravitreal injection.

Enzeevu is indicated to improve and maintain visual acuity in patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD). In addition, the FDA provisionally determined Enzeevu would be interchangeable with the reference medicine as it is currently subject to an unexpired exclusivity for the first interchangeable biosimilar products.

Claire D’Abreu-Hayling, Chief Scientific Officer, Sandoz, said, “nAMD, or wet AMD, continues to be a leading cause of vision impairment in patients over 50 years in North America. This condition affects millions of people, leading to significant challenges in their daily lives due to the progressive loss of central vision. The US approval of Enzeevu is a key milestone in Sandoz efforts to significantly improve the lives of patients impacted by this incurable disease.”

“Launch timing will be dependent on several factors, including the progress and outcome of pending or potential future related litigations or any potential settlements,” the Company stated.

nAMD, also known as wet AMD, is a subtype of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which is a leading cause of vision impairment in patients over 50 years in North America.

Jeff Todd, J.D., President and CEO of Prevent Blindness, said, “As sight disappears, so may a person’s connection to the world. We welcome all treatment options that help maintain vision and meet the unique needs of the individual so those living with wet AMD can potentially maintain their independence longer. At this time, there is no cure for this disease and long-term treatment can be costly. Having more FDA-approved options, including biosimilars, can help make healthcare more person-centered and affordable.”

The FDA granted approval based on the totality of evidence, including comprehensive analytical and preclinical in vitro study data, as well as clinical data from the Mylight study.

This approval follows the acquisition of the Cimerli (ranibizumab-eqrn) business by Sandoz in the US earlier in 2024.

RG Kar Medical College PG medico Murder Case: Doctors Across India on Protest, CM Assures CBI Probe if Mystery Not Resolved

Kolkata: Amid the nationwide protests against the recent brutal rape and murder of a PG respiratory medicine student at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has assured that Kolkata Police fails to resolve the mystery of the case within the next 7 days, the investigation charge can be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

CM Banerjee also said she wants the case to be tried in a fast-track court, PTI has reported. “If the police are unable to solve this by Sunday, we will hand over the case to the CBI. However, the success rate of the central probe agency is very low,” Banerjee told reporters after visiting the residence of the deceased doctor. Meanwhile, the Calcutta High Court will hear a plea seeking a CBI investigation into the matter tomorrow.

Medical Dialogues had reported how the half-naked body of the PG doctor of R G Kar Medical College was recovered from the Seminar Hall by the hospital staff. A preliminary autopsy report has indicated sexual abuse before she was killed.

The inquest report prepared by the police recorded bleeding from both the eyes and her mouth, injury on the face and nails, bleeding from her genitals, and several other injury marks in different parts of the body. After this doctors across the country started a massive protest demanding justice for their colleague’s rape and murder.

Following the massive outrage from the medical fraternity across the country, the Principal of the Institute Dr Sandip Ghosh resigned from his post on Monday. “I am getting defamed on social media…The deceased doctor was like my daughter. As a parent, I resign…I don’t want this should happen to anyone in future,” Ghosh was quoted as saying by ANI.

Police recently arrested the prime suspect Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, who was seen entering the hospital at around 4 am and leaving the premises early on Friday morning. He was arrested after the discovery of a crucial piece of evidence—a Bluetooth device left at the crime scene. This small but vital clue played a pivotal role in leading investigators to Roy.

Massive Protest Across the Country:

Protesting against the incident, the Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA) announced halting elective services in hospitals in solidarity with the R.G. Kar Medical College residents.

“As a mark of our solidarity with the colleagues of R.G.Kar, we announce a nationwide halting of elective services in hospitals starting Monday, 12th August. This decision is not made lightly, but it is necessary to ensure that our voices are heard and that demands for justice and safety are met without further delay,” the association mentioned in a letter directed to the Union Health Minister.

Resident Doctors Association, UP expressed its solidarity with the strike called by FORDA and announced a statewide strike across Medical Colleges in Uttar Pradesh.

As a mark of solidarity, Doctors at SMS Medical College Jaipur wore black ribbons during duty hours. In Bengaluru, doctors also took to the streets. Resident doctors protested at NIMHANS in Bengaluru against the murder and rape of the R G Kar PG Medico.

The Resident doctors at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi also decided to shut down all elective services till justice was served to the deceased doctor. Doctors at Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital, Dr RML Hospital, and Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC) also staged a demonstration protesting against the incident. Photos and videos of doctors at AIIMS Patna, participating in the nationwide protest, are also doing rounds on social media.

BMC MARD (Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors) has also announced the suspension of elective/non-emergency medical services by resident doctors from 8 am on August 13 until the acceptance of demands of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College residents, immediate appointment of a central agency to investigate the case, establishment of a Central Protection Act, an immediate audit and recruitment of the security measures at all medial institutions and that of a detailed report on the total number of CCTV cameras installed in respective hospitals are met.

The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has also given a call for an indefinite shutdown of all elective services, starting from Tuesday. 13th August, 2024.

Bengal Medical Services Take a Hit:

Due to the ongoing casework announced by the junior doctors, interns and postgraduate trainees in West Bengal, the healthcare services across the State have taken a major hit.

TOI has reported that in order to manage the situation, the State Government has cancelled the leave of all the senior doctors to help tackle the patient influx until the situation gets back to normal.

Viral Audio Alleges Involvement of Doctor:

Amid the chaos, confusion and ongoing outrage following the death of the PG Medico, an audio recording of a phone call between an intern doctor with a senior went viral on social media and news channels. In the phone call, the intern was heard saying that the whole movement of the medical college was fake and the principal and his subordinates were running the movement.

Further, the intern doctor was allegedly heard expressing his suspicions that an intern doctor might be involved in the matter and the prime accused who was arrested was just a scapegoat.

Following the audio went viral, social media speculations started running wild, some of the posts even pinpointing a doctor as the possible accused. However, speaking to Medical Dialogues, a doctor, aware of the developments, from the hospitals claimed that these speculations were being made because there was no clarity from the Police. The doctor, on the condition of anonymity, further added that the audio call might be another tactic to shift the blame on an innocent person.

He further informed that a G.B. meeting is being held today at R G Kar to discuss the following course and to push forward the demands for a CBI investigation.

RG Kar PG Medico Murder Case: Nurses hold protest, demand strict action

Kolkata: In response to the alleged rape and murder of a female postgraduate medico at the Department of Chest Medicine at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, nurses  hold protest on Saturday, demanding proper action in the incident.

The doctor, pursuing PG Respiratory Medicine, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in the seminar hall of the city-based R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. Her body was found in half-naked condition with several injury marks, raising suspicions of brutal rape and murder.

The inquest report prepared by the police recorded bleeding from both the eyes and her mouth, injury on the face and nails, bleeding from her genitals, and several other injury marks in different parts of the body. Reportedly, the doctor was on duty and after completing her 36-hour shift, she went to study in the seminar hall, from where her body was recovered in the morning by the hospital staff.

Earlier on Friday, Dr Sandip Ghosh, Principal of R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, commented on the incident, saying, “This is a tragic event. We will only know the cause of death after the postmortem. As the Principal and Head of Administration, I am ensuring that all necessary steps are being taken in the inquiry. Everything is being done properly. Such an incident has never happened before at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital”, news agency ANI reported.

On Friday, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, Suvendu Adhikari, demanded a CBI inquiry into the death of the 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor.

Also Read:PG Medico rape-murder case: RG Kar Medical College Principal resigns amid protests

He also called on student communities to protest against what he described as the state government’s lackadaisical response.

According to an ANI report, taking to the social media platform X, Suvendu Adhikari stated, “The body of the second-year postgraduate student at R G Kar Medical College, found dead inside the Seminar Hall on the 3rd floor of the emergency building under mysterious circumstances, reportedly had injury marks.”

“Unconfirmed reports suggest signs of strangulation and traces of seminal fluid. This appears to be a clear case of murder, possibly involving rape. The case should be immediately transferred to the CBI,” he added. He further criticised the state government, saying, “Instead of addressing the issue seriously, the State Government has formed an 11-member inquiry committee, which bizarrely includes some interns. It seems the government is either trying to cover up its negligence or is not taking this matter seriously.”

“I urge the student community, especially medical students, to protest vigorously against the State Government’s complacent attitude. I will provide all the support necessary to ensure justice for the deceased student,” the BJP leader declared.

Earlier on Friday, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Sougata Roy also commented on the incident, stating, “I learned that this student is from our constituency. I have reviewed all the documents and investigated the matter. We hope the accused will be arrested and punished soon”, adds ANI.

On Friday evening, a group of students organised a candlelight march in the city following the discovery of the postgraduate trainee doctor’s body.
